BOBBY TAMBLING

Bobby Tambling
Bobby Tambling made his Chelsea debut as a 17-year-old in February 1959 scoring the winner in a 3-2 victory over West Ham United. It was the first of his 202 goals, still a club record.
Over the next two seasons Tambling made a handful of further appearances, mostly as a winger and it wasn't until the departure of Jimmy Greaves in 1961 that his career as a goalscorer took off.
Tambling scored 22 goals in his first full campaign even though we were relegated. A year later he became the youngest captain to lead a team to promotion as he totalled 37 goals. Bobby continued to score freely throughout the 1960s as Chelsea threatened to challenge for major honours.
Sadly though, the 1965 League Cup was to be Tambling's only trophy success with Chelsea although he did score one of the goals in the Final win against Leicester City. Bobby did become the first player to score for Chelsea in an FA Cup Final but his goal in 1967 was only a consolation.
Earlier that season Tambling had scored five goals in 6-2 win at Aston Villa. No one has scored more for Chelsea in a league game.
As the 1960s came to end though, Tambling found his place under threat and he played just seven times in the 1969/70 season. He joined Crystal Palace that summer having missed out on a place in the FA Cup Final team
