Dennis Wise

Dennis Wise
Dennis Wise is the joint fifth highest appearance maker in Chelsea history and the second most successful captain.
Originally signed from Wimbledon as a wide man, Wise was soon converted to a central midfielder. Despite his slight stature, Dennis's tough tackling and combative nature made him ideal for the role. He took over the captaincy in 1993 and within a year was leading his team out in an FA Cup Final.
Dennis's leadership qualities were most apparent with the influx of foreign players in the late 1990s as he was the man who made sure that there were no divisions within the dressing room.
On the pitch Wise flourished as well, his game improving as the quality of his team mates did. He was a central figure as he lifted six trophies in four seasons.
Altogether Dennis made 445 Chelsea appearances and scored 76 goals, the most famous of which was in the San Siro with ten minutes to go. Wise would probably have broken the 500 game barrier if disciplinary problems hadn't caused him to miss so many matches. One season, 1998/99 he missed no fewer than 15 games through suspension.
Wise finally left the club in June 2001 as new manager Claudio Ranieri looked to lower the average age of the squad.
