DAN PETRESCU

Dan Petrescu
Dan Petrescu was the first overseas player to reach 100 appearances for Chelsea. He was signed from a Sheffield Wednesday in December 1995 as a wing-back as Glenn Hoddle looked to change the mentality of the team and introduce a more fluid and attractive style of play.
Petrescu, who had played in a European Cup Final for Steaua Bucharest and a World Cup quarter-final for Romania, was someone that Hoddle had been trying to buy for over a year. Dan was an intelligent footballer, completely at home with Hoddle's system and his career flourished at Chelsea.
Even after a change of manager and the subsequent switch to 4-4-2, Petrescu remained an integral part of the team. He was reinvented as a right-sided midfielder and if anything, his performances improved.
Dan played in the three victorious cup final sides of 1997 and 1998, although he was desperately unlucky to be sent off in the Cup Winners' Cup Final. Some of his best football for Chelsea was in the run to the Champions League quarter-finals in 1999/00. Sadly though, Dan fell out with the manager after a defeat at Manchester United in May that year and never played for the club again, not even making the substitutes' bench for the FA Cup Final that season.
