PAT NEVIN

Pat Nevin
Pat Nevin was arguably the least well known of the clutch of summer signings made in 1983 as manager John Neal looked to rebuild the team that had nearly been relegated to the Third Division the season before. Signed from Scottish minnows Clyde for just £95,000 Nevin had to wait until the sixth game of the season to make his debut but then made an immediate impact.

Wee Pat scored 14 goals and made many more, as we won the Second Division Championship, but it was the brilliance and trickery of his wing play that made him popular with supporters, so much so that he was voted Player of the Year in his debut season.
The dazzling form Nevin showed in his first two seasons slowly waned after John Neal was forced to retire and successive managers preferred a more rigid style of play. Even so, Nevin was frequently the most exciting talent on show and he again was Player of the Year in 1987. Eventually, as the team was broken up, Nevin left to join Everton when his contract expired in the summer of 1988.
Although it had been made clear to him he was no longer required, Nevin was devastated when his final game for the club resulted in our relegation to the Second Division. He remains a supporter and is a contributor to the website and matchday magazine.
